The four musicians take the composer’s idea, vary it in their own way, and add some ideas of their own to the original. Benedikt ter Braak at the piano takes the leading role, at the premiere Camille Saint-Saëns had played this part himself. The characterization of the individual animals succeeds strikingly; even without the texts that precede them in performances, it is easy to recognize which animal is meant. Despite the small instrumentation, the quartet succeeds excellently in almost reaching the sound volume of the chamber orchestra envisaged in the original. The lively interpretation is from one cast and makes a good mood!
