Orchestra La Scintilla - Opernhaus Zürich - Riccardo Minasi

Video about the working methods of the artistic director Riccardo Minasi with the Orchestra La Scintilla at the Opernhaus Zürich.

The cultivation of historical performance practice has been a tradition at Opernhaus Zürich for many decades. In the 1970s, Nikolaus Harnoncourt's Monteverdi cycle was the first to cause a nationwide sensation in the field of early music, and in doing so he did further pioneering work: the musicians of the Opernhaus Zürich Orchestra adapted their playing technique to the latest findings in historical performance practice.

It was from this continuum that the Orchestra, today's Philharmonia Zürich, developed into an independent ensemble of first-class specialist members and freelance musicians. The spark that ignited the enthusiasm for historical performance practice gave the ensemble its name: Orchestra La Scintilla.

In the years that followed, performances by such luminaries of the profession as Nikolaus Harnoncourt, William Christie, Mark Minkowski, Reinhard Goebel, Giuliano Carmignola, Giovanni Antonini and Ottavio Dantone were so successful that Zurich Opera House has had all its Baroque operas and, increasingly, works from the classical period performed by this ensemble.

Outside the Opera House, La Scintilla regularly appears in the major concert halls and performs with renowned soloists, instrumentalists and singers.

In 2014, the orchestra received the Echo Klassik Music Prize in the category "Opera Recording of the Year" (19th century) for its recording of Norma with Giovanni Antonini and Cecilia Bartoli. His CD and DVD recordings include Mozart arias with Juan Diego Florez, Norma and La sonnambula with Cecilia Bartoli, Orlando and Iphigénie en Tauride with William Christie, Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria with Nikolaus Harnoncourt.

Since the 2018/19 season, La Scintilla is organising the La Scintilla concert series at Opernhaus Zürich in close collaboration with violinist and conductor Riccardo Minasi. The musical arc spans from the early symphonic beginnings in Italy to the great masters of the Baroque, Georg Friedrich Händel and Johann Sebastian Bach, and the sounds of early Giuseppe Verdi.

An exciting new energy on the music scene, Rochat involves herself in projects that have brought her to various stages worldwide including the Tonhalle Zurich, Vienna’s Musikverein, the Carnegie Hall in New York, and the Mariinsky Theater II St. Petersburg. She has featured in recital or as soloist, performing not only great pieces of the standard cello repertoire but also pieces that are the fruit of her research on forgotten composers and music from around the world. Nadège won several first prizes in competitions and released two very different CDs, one with French music for cello and orchestra and the other one about her project “La Vida Breve” (“the short life”) with the Guitarist Rafael Aguirre, which targets Spanish and South American classical music.

Nadège Rochat, Franco-Swiss cellist born in Geneva in 1991, began learning cello at the age of 4 with her aunt Fabienne Diambrini. Later, she joined the Conservatoire of Geneva, where she was taught by Daniel Haefliger. At the age of 15, she moved to Cologne where she studied Bachelor at the HfMT with Prof. Maria Kliegel. In 2015, she graduated in the Masters programme of the Royal Academy of Music in London where she studied with Robert Cohen.
Always in search of a wider knowledge of her instrument and music in general, she participated in numerous masterclasses by musical personalities such as Anner Bijlsma, Christoph Richter, Heinrich Schiff, Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt, Itamar Golan and Colin Carr.

Nadège performed as soloist with orchestras in venues such as the Tonhalle Zurich, Vienna’s Musikverein, the Konzerthaus Dortmund and the Victoria Hall Geneva. She was accompanied by the Staatskapelle Weimar, the Dortmund Philharmonic, the Amadeus Chamber Orchestra of Polish Radio and the NDR (Norddeutscher Rundfunk Orchestra), among others. She played recitals in the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Beethoven Haus Bonn and the Festspiele Mecklenburg- Vorpommern and her duo project with guitar “La Vida Breve” brought her to the Carnegie Hall in New York, the Gasteig Munich and Vienna’s Konzerthaus, to mention only a few of the most prestigious places.

Nadège’s awards in national and international competitions include first prizes in Swiss and German national competitions for youth (2006, 2007 and 2009), the SUISA foundation Prize for the interpretation of contemporary music (2003 and 2006), the Klassik Preis of the Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) for the interpretation of Beethoven 3rd Sonata for Piano and Cello (2009), the 2. Prize of the “Kulturkreis der deutschen Wirtschaft im BDI” international competition (2013), the 1st Prize, Jury Prize and Public Prize in the ProCello competition of the HfMT in Cologne (2013) and the May Muckle Prize for Cello in the Royal Academy of Music London (2015).

Her first CD (2012), featured the first cello concerto by Edouard Lalo and the first Concerto by Darius Milhaud. She was accompanied by the Württembergische Philharmonie Reutlingen under Ola Rudner. In January 2015, she released a new album presenting her project “La Vida Breve” featuring own arrangements of Spanish and South American pieces for Cello and Guitar with the Spanish guitarist Rafael Aguirre. This CD was broadcasted in many European radios (Radio Stephansdom Vienna, Radio Classique Live (Paris), Hessischer Rundfunk, Radio Berlin Brandenburg etc.). Gramophone wrote about it: “The warmth and specificity of expression in this disc are such that nobody’s winter should be without it”.

Nadège Rochat was awarded scholarships by the Dr. Werner Carl Dörken Stiftung and the Mozartgesellschaft Dortmund. Her studies were supported by the “Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes”.

    _______

Their point of departure and focus is his String Quartet no. 1 in A minor. Robert Schumann always had difficulty with this particular genre, and in 1842 he brought his "attempts at writing quartets" to an end in a headlong burst of creativity that produced his opus 41, comprising three quartets.

  • Mari Kodama, Kent Nagano, DSO Berlin - Beethoven: Piano Concertos 0-5 (Official Trailer)

Mari Kodama, Kent Nagano, DSO Berlin - Beethoven: Piano Concertos 0-5 (Official Trailer)

Together with the Berlin-based Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester (DSO) Mari Kodama and her husband Kent Nagano have now completed the recording of all of Beethoven's piano concertos by jumping, as it were, back in time twice: the last element of this recording series that has spanned more than 13 years was Beethoven's concerto "number nought" (WoO 4) – personally edited by Mari Kodama from the autograph score. The complete 4-CD edition will be released on the Berlin Classics label on October 11, 2019.

The original manuscript of this piano concerto is kept at the State Library in Berlin. This is not a completed score, because there is no orchestration. That said, Beethoven annotated the short score, especially in the first two movements, with indications as to which instrument was to play which part. The orchestra score which is available today was written in the early twentieth century based on those annotations. The only problem is: "Today, armed with the knowledge we now have acquired about the young Beethoven, we would perform this concerto quite differently in places," explain Mari Kodama and Kent Nagano in unison. They therefore present a very personal adaptation that emerged during rehearsal with the orchestra and at the recording sessions, and which reflects Kodama's and Nagano's individual image of Beethoven. They aim to make audible the exuberant freshness and urgent sense of awakening in the young, almost childlike Beethoven's writing shortly before his artistic powers were to burst forth, the joie de vivre and vital energy in a style that owes something to the playfulness of both Haydn and Mozart. That is Mari Kodama's intention, and she plays it in precisely such a versatile manner.

Combined with the classical canon of the piano concertos nos. 1–5, the resulting comprehensive edition is complemented by the Triple Concerto for piano, violin and cello op. 56, the Rondo WoO 6 and the Eroica Variations op. 35, offering insight into the artist's longstanding involvement with her musical companion Ludwig van Beethoven. And the recordings of his works seem to lead the listener through the composer's life. "If you play all of them, it is like accompanying Beethoven on a journey through his life," explains Mari Kodama, and Kent Nagano adds: "You acknowledge the musical genius and at the same time you recognise the development of European music, because Beethoven was undoubtedly its pioneer." He led the way in changing the structure, form and harmony of music, just as there was an equally radical shift in the world around him; after the French Revolution society and business and the incipient industrial revolution began to alter the way people lived.

"He is and remains an optimist, someone who can do no other than believe in what he wishes to communicate to us through his music," explains Kodama. She says this helps her. The fact that she herself is an optimist can partly be attributed to Beethoven. Kodama, Nagano and the DSO – one might imagine them almost as a trio where all the musicians have blind faith in each other and are therefore able to produce a degree of musical intensity that brings the young Beethoven back to life.
